Observations

On Friday night I was at Central to look at student work.  When one looks at student work I have to remind myself that it’s not about the show but, as we are consumers or often place into a spectoral position in these presentations, it’s difficult to not be overtly subjective. I mean, on one [...]

I really love the simplicity of Melanie Wilson’s piece– utilising “live” and mediatized voice while still exploring core concepts of storytelling.

Documentation of performance artist Melanie Wilson’s recent production.
Taking its cue from Chris Marker’s ‘La Jetee’, Iris Brunette is set in a post-apocalyptic city, devastated by a war that has [...]

On paper, at least, Radstrom suggest that certain procedures should be in place should a member of the audience want to intervene. Yet this production was so afraid to offend. It was afraid that someone would intervene. It was afraid that someone would protest. It was afraid that someone would be moved enough to stop the play.
It was afraid to challenge the critic

As media was such an essential element to how the public constructed the Bulger case, the imagery would have to be seen from a multitude of vantage points. The way we constructed our opinions about the event was filtered through the media sources we choose to receive information.

Watch Sher speak to Mark Lawson

I was really quite annoyed by Anthony Sher’s remarks with Mark Lawson. Though I think his intensions are in the right place his narrow view of theatre will contribute to what he fears, and that is, the “death of theatre”. Yes it is true the fame of film and television is [...]

I had left my Twitter to sit for months with only one follower but decided to dust off the site and be one with Stephen Fry. As a Sunday drew in and as Stephen Fry sat in a rainy car to city airport, I’ve tweeked my blog site, spent the most part of day twittering to find some followers, downloaded Twitteriffic and Tweekdeck and hoped to play six degrees of Stephen Fry with every Twitter with a name or contact I recognized in the hope that Stephen Fry would tweek me

Successful Mass Media has a mission to reach the individual ears and eyes with a simple message that avoids complexity and nuance. I held out as long as I could before purchasing an iPhone….2 days in total–now I found a new way to be part of mass culture while simultaneously drowning out the excessive noise [...]

In true Tony Soprano fashion a few months ago I was able to “get” the latest episodes of the final series. (These days you don’t have to meet up with some jamook down by the Jersey City docks to get your hands on deemed illegal wares.) The show is back on Channel 4 UK and [...]

If one is to observe the anthropology of early cultures it is easy to understand the importance of the collective for individual survival. The theatre of the village ritual was played for the individual in order for him to understand his purpose in the system. However, [...]

Ok I’ve lived now for over 10 years in Britain. Even after all this time I still feel like an alien. It’s not so much to do with the rampant anti-Americanism that is perpetuated by Bush’s leadership, no, it’s the small everyday things I’ll never understand. For instance tonight there was a program, I caught [...]

I’m a fan but I’m not one either.
I always experience a range of reactions when ever I see a piece of Lepage.
The most honest of those is jealousy.

So its very difficult for me to be objective.
Admiration
Resentment
Pleasure
Boredom
Yet it is never complete satisfaction,
Dragons’ Trilogy is the closest I’ve come to [...]

America can no longer control its images. As the unending flood of information pours onto our desktop, there can never again be a unified image that defines a moment in history. We have too much choice for the propaganda machines to work efficiently. As the coverage of Katrina continues Bush and his fellow opportunist [...]

After a very long absence due to server issue beyond my control I finally changed to a new server and now can begin to post again.
The post will be a combinations of works in progress, media research, reviews–or at least my take on things and observations.
Began this week working on a new project with Martha [...]

Heard on the 8:18 SouthEastern train to Charing Cross, Two average women, pushing 40, on their way to an average job
Woman One: Amy wants to go into theatre.
Woman Two: What for?
Woman One: I don’t know where she got the idea from. She did something in school. Just comes to me, she says, I wants [...]

Today in the New York Time’s Home Section a caption reads:
The photographer Gregory Colbert has turned a theater into a living space, and has created a temporary museum for an exhibition of his photos.
I’m intrigued by the literal context of the sentence. There seems to be an unspoken assumption that theatre is a non-living [...]
