Projects

Early concept sketch-up plan.
The space will be broken into four rooms which will be designed by different designers. Their requirement is that an “event” must occur within them–something public and something private. Each room’s event will be based on a broad thematic 1. sex 2.Fame 3.Death 4. Insignificance
Audience will choose a room to enter, partake [...]

I’m embarking on a new piece of research that will examine the notion of liminality within digital performance.  Much has been spoken lately about the aspect of liveness and Phillip Auslander’s book on the subject has become requisite reading for first year theatre students.
This idea, which has been spinning around my head for a while, [...]

On paper, at least, Radstrom suggest that certain procedures should be in place should a member of the audience want to intervene. Yet this production was so afraid to offend. It was afraid that someone would intervene. It was afraid that someone would protest. It was afraid that someone would be moved enough to stop the play.
It was afraid to challenge the critic

Attempting to create some “poetic” motion for transition sequences within the piece that support the penultimate scene of the play.

One again amongst another project where conceptually everyone is interested in incorporating media as a language but as they haven’t  used it often they seem sightly uncertain.  Working on This isn’t Romance at the Soho Theatre with Lisa Goldman at the helm as director.  It’s a nice team and the cast is wonderful. However, as I’ve never [...]

In January I worked with my students in trying out some ideas for The Overlook Project.

The Overlook
In one way The Overlook’s conceit is to frame a piece of classical text within a contemporary paradigm. It is also utilizing a concept commonly found on the web and in underground music called “mashup”. The most infamous example of Mashup was the successful merging of the Beatles White Album and Rapper Jay-Z’s [...]

Met with producer Purni Morell. Purni was kind enough to put me up for the night which ended up being two as my EasyJet flight was cancelled due to fog.
We talked about having The Overlook at the Tramway and crunched through numbers. It all seems do-able but we are going to have to do some [...]

Presented the MA collaborative piece at Wimbledon on Friday. It turned out far better than I had anticipated. It is not that I thought it wasn’t going to work. I just didn’t know if all the elements would work well combined. A good crowd turned out, which is a [...]

Students in the studio working on the collaborative project

I’ve come home very tired. Up at six to be in the car park to cut down branches. It had to be done I suppose. I could feel the tension evolving. There are the usual array of dedicated souls ready to have a go and help out. But I can’t help to notice the whispers–the [...]

I’m currently working with my students on a new project at Wimbledon. The starting point for the piece was Roland Barthes essay “Camera Lucida”. From that the students researched photographic images that demonstrated Barthes theory on Studium and Punctum. It’s a bit difficult with a new group, having not known them very well, I find [...]
